Peru concerns over trial of magistrates

Lima, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) The Peruvian government expressed its deep concern over the parliamentary decision to submit the members of the National Justice Board (JNJ) to a summary process, with a view to dismissing them, but refrained from pronouncing itself against it.

The Justice Minister Eduardo Arana did not condemn the measure which, according to critics, intends to complete the control of the justice system, since it has already appointed members of the Supreme Court, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Constitutional Court.

Arana said the Government is deeply concerned about the summary investigation to the JNJ agreed by the Congress plenary, after a series of hostile statements to the magistrates in charge of appointing and supervising judges and prosecutors.

He added that he has discussed the issue with Prime Minister Alberto Otárola and they agreed in considering the inquiry worrying “because we consider that the institutions and democracy may be at risk and because we believe that the constitutionally autonomous bodies must be protected”.
