High incidence of dengue fever in Dominican Republic causes alerts

Santo Domingo, Sep 6 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Ministry of Public Health affirmed that the highest incidence of dengue fever is concentrated in Greater Santo Domingo and Santiago province, although it is a situation that affects the country as a whole.

In view of a fact that specialists consider “serious”, the vice-minister of Collective Health of this ministry, Eladio Pérez, said that the monitoring is permanent and urged the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) and the specialized medical societies to join the work of training, prevention and control of the disease.

Perez denied that the increase in the number of patients has taken the health authorities unready and assured that plans are in place to control the disease.

He clarified that this is not a problem exclusive to the Dominican Republic, but that dengue affects today the whole region of the Americas and even this nation does not appear in the list of alerts of the World Health Organization.

Regarding the forecasts, Perez said that an increase in the curve of new cases is expected due to the climatic conditions that favor the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, transmitter of the disease.

He indicated that although the number of suspected cases is increasing, the lethality rate remains at 0,048%.

According to the most recent bulletin of the Ministry of Public Health released last week, up to the end of August, 4,663 cases and five deaths from the disease were reported in the Caribbean nation.
