Colombia: 35 parties participate in local elections

Bogota, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) A total of 35 political forces are competing today in Colombia for the regional elections to be held on October 29.

On that day, citizens will be able to exercise their right to vote to elect the next mayors, governors, deputies, councilmen and members of local administrative boards for the 2024-2027 period.

A total of 20,137 public positions will be subject to election: 32 governors and 418 deputies that will make up the departmental assemblies, 112 mayors and 12,072 councilmen of all the municipalities of the country, including Bogota and, in addition, 6,513 councilmen that will make up the local administrative boards will be elected.

Several analyses show that, since the political reform of 2003, there were not so many parties in Colombia with recognition by the National Electoral Council, financing and the capacity to endorse candidates, and according to the newspaper La Silla Vacía “there are more parties to the left than to the right”.

According to the Electoral Observation Mission (MOE), one of the fundamental issues that, two months before election day, should be in the focus of the authorities is the financing of campaigns, information on their income and expenses.

In this regard, it detailed that, as of August 30, it consulted the declarations of 246 candidates of which only two have reported income and expenses, both from Antioquia.

Of the remaining 244, 132 do not present information on the financing of their campaigns, and 112 are not available for consultation in Cuentas Claras, an application of the National Electoral Council, said the MOE.
