India rejects UN unit’s statement on Manipur

New Delhi, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) India on Tuesday rejected a statement by the Special Procedures Branch of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the current situation in Manipur, and described it as unjustified, presumptive, and misleading.

In a note verbale published by local media, the Permanent Mission of India at the United Nations underscored that the situation in Manipur is peaceful and stable.

It also reiterated the Government’s commitment to taking requisite steps to maintain peace and stability in Manipur, and protect the human rights of the Indian people.

It added that the UN experts’ comments contain a total lack of understanding about the situation in Manipur and the steps taken by the Indian Government to address it.

India’s Permanent Mission also expressed its disappointment and surprise over the press release, which does not respect the 60-day deadline for the Indian Government’s response to a joint meeting held on the same subject on August 29, 2023.

It urged the Group of Independent Experts to refrain from commenting on developments that have no relevance to the mandate given to them by the Human Rights Council.

The Indian law enforcement authorities and security forces are committed to dealing with law-and-order situations strictly by the principles of legal certainty, necessity, proportionality, and non-discrimination, the Indian mission reiterated.
