Organizations to march in Guatemala in defense of democracy

Guatemala City, Sep 2 (Prensa Latina) Social organizations, collectives and students will march today in Guatemala in defense of democracy, against corruption, in order to support the popular will expressed at the polls and prevent a coup d'état.

At 12:00, local time, they called for a march from the capital’s sixth avenue and 18th street to the Central Plaza, after denouncing those who refuse to accept the results of the elections, as well as the call for unity around the elected president, Bernardo Arévalo.

Journalists for Democracy, the Santa Hermandad de Nuestra Señora de la Huelga de Dolores of the Universidad de San Carlos, the Frente Ciudadano por la Democracia, Justicia Ya, the political movement Codeca, among others, called participants to be dressed in black, representing by this “the death of corruption”.

We voted yesterday, today we march and defend our decision, they pointed out in one of the messages released, and a second text indicated “they can cut all the flowers but they cannot stop the spring”, a phrase of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

Two hours later, the central park La Paz of Coban, capital city of the Alta Verapaz department, will host a rally called United for Democracy.

On Monday at 08:00 Santa Cruz del Quiché will gather demonstrators with the slogan Que renuncien, and simultaneously, throughout the country, a sit-in is planned in front of the headquarters of the Public Prosecutor’s Offices (MP) .
