Bolsonaro and wife opt for silence in Brazil’s high-profile case

Brasilia, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and his wife, former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, opted today for silence in testimony at the Federal Police (PF) on the illegal sale of jewelry received during the mandate.

The allegation of the defense of the couple is that the Supreme Federal Court (STF) would not be the appropriate forum for the processing of the case, and if the first instance of the Federal Justice.

With the above, the former occupants of the Planalto Palace, seat of the Executive Branch, will choose not to provide information to federal investigators.

“The Attorney General’s Office of the Republic did not recognize the competence of the Supreme Court to receive and judge the facts”, indicates an excerpt from the allegation of the couple’s lawyers.

Their statements take place simultaneously. At the same time, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office will hear the former aides of the former military officer, lieutenant colonel Mauro Cid, Marcelo Câmara and Osmar Crivelatti.

The family’s lawyer, Frederick Wassef, the former president’s former secretary Fabio Wajngarten and General Mauro Lourena Cid, father of the right arm of the far-right politician, will also be questioned.

The question of where the investigation should be conducted (STF or first federal instance) was decided by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes earlier this month, in the same order that authorized searches related to the alleged illegal negotiation of jewelry abroad.

According to De Moraes, the PF investigation revealed “strong indications of diversion of assets of high patrimonial value delivered by foreign authorities to the President of the Republic or public agents in his service, and subsequent concealment of the origin, location and ownership of the proceeds”.
