Chile to launch plan to search for victims of dictatorship

Chile-Desaparecidos-Dictadura
Santiago de Chile, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) In a function at Plaza de la Constitución, the Chilean government intends to launch a National Plan for the Search of Disappeared Detainees during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990).

President Gabriel Boric will preside over the ceremony, which will take place on the occasion of the commemoration of the International Day of the victims of crimes against humanity during Pinochet’s rule.

According to reports, more than 40,000 cases of torture, kidnapping, disappearance and murder were registered in the country during the 17 years of Pinochet’s regime, and there are still 1,100 people whose whereabouts are unknown.

The search program will start from the integration of all the information gathered by the truth commissions, the courts of justice, relatives of the victims and previous governments.

Minister of Justice Luis Cordero explained during an interview with the foreign press that the objective of the plan is to know the conditions and circumstances in which those events occurred. “This is a form of reparation, not only to the relatives of the victims, but also to society,” he said.

The launch of the plan coincides with the 50th anniversary of the coup against the Popular Unity government, one of the darkest moments in the history of Chile.

The commemorative program extends for almost the entire year and includes pilgrimages, talks, exhibitions, events in memory sites, book launches, television programs, film presentations, among other activities.
