Elbé expressed concern about the security situation, acknowledged that several areas of the city are currently controlled by armed groups, and announced measures to avoid their growth.
Elbé admitted the escalation of violence on the part of the gangs, particularly in the metropolitan area of the capital, and stated that police are mobilizing in Tabarre, in the center of Port-au-Prince, and in Torcel and Croix des Bouquets in the northeast, with the mandate to restore order and stop the gangs advance.
Several suspected gang members died in Carrefour-Feuilles as a result of police operations; some of their hideouts were destroyed by the Police.
According to official data, the actions of the gangs in Carrefour Feuilles forced over five thousand people to leave their homes and take refuge in public squares, schools and gyms, although organizations such as the Center for Analysis and Research in Human Rights affirm that the real number of displaced persons exceeds 10,000, and demanded the rapid intervention of the authorities.
The operations will continue so that the thousands of displaced people can return to their homes, Elbé assured.
