UN envoy to Cyprus to analyze the path to resolve the conflict

Miroslav-Jenca-500x375
United Nations, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) The Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and Americas in the United Nations Department of Political Affairs, Miroslav Jenča, will travel to Cyprus to meet with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot authorities and discuss the path to a solution to the conflict.

The visit will also deal with recent events, when the body denounced hostile actions within the security zone that divides Cyprus under the jurisdiction of the UN.

The incident resulted in injuries among United Nations personnel and damage to their vehicles after they tried to prevent unauthorized construction work by Turkish Cypriots.

The Secretary General’s press office assured that Jenča will meet separately with the Greek Cypriot leader, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, as well as their representatives. Discussions are expected to focus on the way forward on the Cyprus issue.

Last Monday, the Security Council warned of hostile actions on the part of the Turkish Cypriot side within the area that divides Cyprus, near Pyla/Pile.

The agency issued a statement expressing its concern “over the start of unauthorized construction work”, which it described as contrary to the Council’s resolutions and a violation of the status quo in the area.

The statement “welcomed” the interruption of unauthorized construction and the removal of equipment and personnel.

The Secretary General of the UN Guterres proposed the appointment of a United Nations envoy to provide support on the way to formal negotiations, although this has not yielded an agreement between the parties.
