Cuban Prime Minister calls to maintain prevention against dengue

Havana, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero on Saturday called not to lower the guard in the prevention and control of dengue in order to celebrate the World Day against this disease today.

On his X account, formerly Twitter, the head of Government urged to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and to go to the healthcare services when symptoms appear. “It’s a battle for everyone,” he stressed.

Cuban scientists are working on a dengue vaccine candidate, which has a safe technological platform and is based on recombinant proteins.

In the course of 2023, a new rapid diagnosis system for viral diseases, on which specialists from the Immunoassay Center are working, might be available.

Dengue causes flu-like symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle aches, chills, nausea and vomiting, and can sometimes evolve to a life-threatening condition called severe or dengue hemorrhagic fever. It is a widespread infection in tropical regions of the planet and it has developed increasingly in urban areas lately, becoming a serious public health problem.

More than half of the world’s population is at risk of contracting the disease and every year more than 390 million cases are reported worldwide, 500,000 of which are cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever, which causes some 25,000 deaths yearly.
