Chile declared bird flu-free in poultry

aves-768x512
Santiago, Chile, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) Chile is currently free of highly pathogenic bird flu in poultry after the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) closed all outbreaks in commercial farms with positive cases.

According to Agriculture Minister Esteban Valenzuela, this is a good news amid the tragedy caused by rains in the center-south O’Higgins region, one of the leading producers of white meat for export. “It is one problem less, and that is very important,” Valenzuela said after recalling that slaughterhouses’ work is reactivated and job creation is increasing.

SAG National Director José Guajardo highlighted the coordinated work of all officials and the collaboration of the industry to declare the country free of this deadly virus.

Guajardo urged people to remain vigilant and take extreme biosecurity measures in all facilities to avoid contact with wild birds or other animals that could be infected.

Chile confirmed the first H5N1 case last December 7. Since then, the disease has spread nationwide, affecting birds and other species such as sea lions and penguins.
