On Thursday, the President tweeted his most heartfelt condolences to his widow, family, colleagues and friends. “May his legacy endure and grow is the best tribute,” he added.

Ceballos was born in the central territory of Cienfuegos in 1935 and in 1961 he graduated as a medical doctor.

In the 1970s, he created the Army Sanitary School in Camagüey province.

He provided his services to the victims of the earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua, and accompanied the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, as part of his support team during his trips to Algeria, Iraq, India and Vietnam.

He was also a combatant in the revolutionary struggle in Cuba and an internationalist fighter in the People’s Republic of Angola.

Later, he became a professor and taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses on orthopedics.

In 2016, he received the Scientific Merit Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Ministry of Public Health.
