Although the World Health Organization (WHO) ended the global emergency decreed in 2020 due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in May, the disease has not disappeared and continues to be monitored, even if it is hardly discussed and its human impact is far from the danger it represented.

Le Figaro newspaper and the TF1 channel echoed the data collected by the Gisaid database of the Pasteur Institute, which shows that 35 percent of the sequenced patient samples correspond to EG.5, also called “Eris”, so that this derivation of the Omicron variant would be the dominant one on French soil.

However, experts called for a cautious look at the figures, in view of the significant decrease in diagnostic tests for the disease which has sent the planet into a state of shock, with nearly seven million deaths, 167,000 of them in France.

In its most recent bulletin, the Santé Publique France agency identified a slight increase in referrals to intensive care at the national level related to Covid-19 in early August.

Local media recalled that increases in the incidence of EG.5, which may be more transmissible but less serious, were also reported in the United Kingdom and the United States.
