On Tuesday, Chile agreed to act as intermediary, after Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador refused to hand over the position to the Government of Dina Boluarte, who is held responsible for the repression of the protests that began in 2022, as a result of which some 70 people were killed.
According to van Klaveren, all member countries have made a significant effort to reach consensus and hand over the presidency to Peru.
“It is in our interest that the Pacific Alliance remains at the technical level and can concentrate on work that has already been very hard,” the foreign minister said.
Created in 2011, this integration initiative is made up of Mexico, Chile, Peru and Colombia and its objective is to advance gradually towards the free mobility of goods, services, capital and people.
