Spanish unions close ranks and Sánchez receives support

Madrid, Jul 20 (Prensa Latina) The largest worker union organizations in Spain, CCOO and UGT, closed ranks today in favor of a future progressive government, in line with the postulates of the current Executive.

In parallel, the Spanish president, socialist Pedro Sánchez, received numerous international support, as well as increasing sympathy internally, but also devastating criticism from figures and politicians sympathetic to the right, as well as media analysts.

Among them, the support for Sánchez, was highlighted by the presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, and the Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Costa, the Federal Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, and other personalities such as Michelle Bachelet (Chile), Gordon Brown (United Kingdom), Ernesto Samper (Colombia) and George Papandreou (Greece), among others.

Workers Commissions (CCOO) and the General Union of Workers (UGT), signed a manifesto together with 50 other international organizations from around the world, in defense of a progressive government that bets on European ‘integration’ and not on austerity.

At a press conference, the general secretary of the CCOO, Unai Sordo, assured that “it would be collective suicide for Spain to bet on reducing the deficit and debt through cut policies to justify lowering taxes for those who have more”, in direct reference to a conservative administration (Popular Party with extreme right of Vox).

For his part, Pepe Alvarez, leader of the UGT, pointed out that the extreme right is knocking on the door “and the unions want to close the door.”

The pension system, the labor reform and the stability of employment are at stake, but also freedoms, he added.

In her turn, the general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation, Esther Lynch, considered that the July 23 elections are “not only about the future of Spain, but also about the direction of Europe, because the Spanish government is one of the strongest progressive influences in the EU”.

Yesterday, in a television debate, the denialism of the Vox boss, Santiago Abascal, with climate change, gender violence, the United Nations 2030 agenda, rejection of the LGTBI community, and contrary to the Law of Democratic Memory, immigration and the current Labor Reform, became clear.

The PP would have to achieve an absolute parliamentary majority (176 seats) to settle alone in the Government, which would avoid a pact with Vox.
