Expert highlights Ethipia´s benefit as a member of BRICS

Addis Ababa, Jul 20 (Prensa Latina) Ethiopia's economic and political development in the international arena would improve if its application for joining the BRICS bloc (Brazil, Russia, China, India and South Africa) were to be approved, an expert said.

Professor Samuel Tefera, from the Center for African and Asian Studies at the University of Addis Ababa, told the Ethiopia Press Agency that the economy of the group represents 31.7 percent worldwide, hence the membership would benefit the country in many aspects.

Tefera highlighted that the Gross Domestic Product of the members of the bloc exceeds 30 trillion dollars, with around three billion people of the world population residing in the member countries. Joining the BRICS group would open the doors for Ethiopia to join a big market system and create an alternative political and economic system, which is not dominated by just a few world powers, he stressed.

The professor specified that the BRICS not only wants to use currencies other than the dollar, but also seeks to create a world free of Western domination.

Mindful of the fact that Ethiopia follows the diplomatic principle of “peaceful coexistence”, its accession would provide better diplomatic options for the country, he concluded.

In recent years, countries such as Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Türkiye and others have shown interest in joining the body.
