Agricultural production in Cuba expected in second semester

Havana, Jul 19 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's agricultural production expects to increase its results in the second half of 2023, despite showing unfavorable figures and defaults, according to data released today by the Ministry of Agriculture (Minag).

During a debate of the Agri-Food Commission of the National Assembly of People’s Power (parliament), directors of the groups of Minag’s Higher Organization of Business Management explained that despite the complex situation the country is going through, it is expected to achieve an increase in pig, poultry, forestry and livestock production.

They specified that although the national food demand will be alleviated, all the needs of the people will not yet be satisfied.

In this sense, Cuban Vice President, Salvador Valdés, called to take advantage of the possibilities offered by business activity in agriculture and the governments of territories, particularly the new capacities granted to Municipal Councils.

He recalled the island adopted 63 measures to boost agricultural production, however it is still necessary to carry out a structural transformation and resize what is established.

He urged to continue the use of agrology, use cropping systems, share experiences that have had results and improve business management.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Agriculture Ydael Pérez commented that his portfolio is engaged in business improvement.

He referred to the importance of the use of science and innovation, formation of cadres, training of young people and ordering of productive poles.

Pérez called for “sovereignty by maintaining the programs to feed the inhabitants of the cities,” and urged to continue working with foreign investment.

At the meeting it was learned that until May productions obtained were achieved on the basis of extensive agriculture, with limitations of fertilizers, pesticides, fuels, animal feed and other basic inputs, to which organizational and management problems are added.
