Garth Wilkin, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, stated that they are currently working on an amendment to the Transit Law, which would introduce a demerit point system under which imprudent drivers on the roads could lose their licenses.

Violators, would face the loss of their driving licenses, and would not get them back until they train in safe driving courses.

“We are also reviewing the highway code to examine speed limits and introduce possible sleeping policemen, also known as speed bumps,” he added.

The Police Force issued a statement earlier this month saying it was concerned about the unusually high number of accidents, some of which have resulted in the loss of lives.

Figures from the Transit Department of that entity indicated that, from January to June of this year, 708 such incidents were reported in St. Kitts with four fatalities, while Nevis reported 199 cases but no deaths.

During the same period in 2022, on the first of these islands, 658 accidents were reported including one death.
