Russians embrace Chinese cars after Western brands depart

Moscow, Jul 15 (Prensa Latina) As the exodus of Western automakers narrows options for Russian consumers, Chinese automakers are filling the gap, forcing Russians to overcome their reluctance to embrace Chinese brands and accept higher prices.

Chinese brands such as Haval, Chery and Geely now account for almost 40% of Russia’s new-car sales, data from analytical agency Autostat and consulting company PPK showed, up from less than 10% in January-February of 2022.

More than two dozen Chinese car brands are circulating in Russia, and at the same time, nearly half of new car sales in Russia come from China.

Since June, official sales of IXEN, Baic and Jetour brands began in Russia.

In addition, it is possible to buy Byd, Brilliance and Zotye cars arriving in the country through parallel import.

The Association of European Companies indicated that car sales in Russia in H1 2023 grew by 9.9% to 428, 300 units.

The top 10 best-selling car brands include Chinese brands Chery, Haval, Geely, Exeed, Omoda and Changan.
