Colombia presents report on Peace Agreement to UN Security Council

Bogotá, Jul 12 (Prensa Latina) Carlos Ruiz Massieu, special representative of the United Nations Secretary General, will present the Quarterly Report on the Verification Mission in Colombia to the Security Council.

In his most recent report on the Mission, which covers the period from March 27th to June 26th of this year, the Secretary General, António Guterres, acknowledges the progress made in the implementation of central aspects of the Agreement and encourages the Colombian government to continue persevering both in the implementation and in the dialogue to tackle the violence and deepen the scope of peace.

He also welcomed the progress on various points of the Agreement reached in 2016 between the State and the extinct Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia-Ejército del Pueblo (Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces-People’s Army, FARC-EP), as well as the approval of key policies and legislation and the allocation of resources to accelerate their implementation. Guterres highlighted the agreements reached on the ceasefire and the participation of the society in the Dialogue Table between the Government and the National Liberation Army.

Among other aspects, he made special mention of the legislative advances related to the implementation of the integral rural reform, such as the approval of the Agrarian Jurisdiction and the recognition of the peasantry as a subject of rights in the Constitution.

The report praised the fact that the Comunes Party is studying possible candidates for the upcoming departmental and municipal elections, that is the reason why the Comunes brings to the forefront the attacks and threats against ex-combatants who seek to be involved in the elections and demands greater institutional efforts to guarantee their safety and participation.

The United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia verifies the reincorporation of the FARC-EP into civil life, economically, socially and politically; and the security guaranties of ex-combatants, communities and organizations in the territories in the context of the implementation of the Final Peace Agreement of 2016.

It is expected that there will be a pronouncement in the report about the murders of ex-guerrillas reincorporated into civilian life from 2016 to date.
