New studies on climate change presented in Cuba

Havana, Jul 6 (Prensa Latina) Results on humidity, temperatures and adaptation to climate change were presented on Thursday in Cuba, where the 14th International Convention on Environment and Development is taking place.

Air temperature continues to increase, consistent with estimates made in previous modeling made in Cuba, Eduardo Planos, a researcher at Cuba’s Institute of Meteorology, explained.

The biggest warming will occur mainly in the hottest period of the year, a sign that will become clearer as time goes by, the expert said at the central Habana Libre Hotel in Havana, one of the venues of the meeting that opened on Monday and will close on Friday.

He regretted that world agreement are not satisfactory in their fulfillment, while the global temperature reached a point of no return (a 1.5-degrees- Celsius increase).

Climate change has consequences for Cuba in aspects such as the so-called basic system, climate, water, humidity deficit and sea level rise.

He explained that adaptation to climate change is a natural process, and not a conscious one, and this phenomenon affects human health and agriculture.

Adaptation to climate change is a process of strategic vision for the future, which must start from the present and be based on modeling how natural and human ecosystems would function under the influence of a new climatic state.

A better understanding of the phenomenon is not an action exclusive to scientists; it means that all actors in society must understand what is involved and how to respond.

“The first thing to understand is the inner workings of this phenomenon in order to then understand the adaptation process,” the specialist emphasized.

All our research confirms that Cuba’s climate has changed, especially in temperatures and precipitation.
