One dead due to heat and thousands affected by heavy rains in China

Beijing, Jul 3 (Prensa Latina) China reported one death from heat stroke in the capital and at least 114,600 victims due to the heavy rains that affected central and southern provinces, with catastrophic natural disasters.

A tour guide of the Summer Palace died yesterday due to heat stroke, even though he received emergency care, according to authorities in Beijng.

Beijing is one of the regions affected during the recent days by the historic rise of temperatures, and issued red alerts and called on the population to avoid being unnecessarily outdoors.

Heavy rains and their devastation left more than 5,600 people relocated, 1,795 houses destroyed, 80 roads damaged and economic losses of more than 120 million yuan (16.6 million dollars) in a rural county of Shaanxi province.

Hunan reports a similar situation, with more than 109,000 victims and material damages of 575 million yuan (almost 79.5 million dollars).

Dozens of rivers overflowed, landslides and other geological disasters impacted socio-economic life in these and other places, such as Chongqing municipality.

China has been under siege from extreme heat in the north and downpours in the center-south since last month.

Today, meteorological authorities warned of persistent storms with associated flooding and landslides in Shandong, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Guizhou and seven other provinces.
