Supreme Court of Brazil hears coup witnesses and defendants

Brasilia, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) The Federal Supreme Court (STF) of Brazil will enter its third day of hearing prosecutions and defense witnesses, in addition to those accused of the coup attacks on January 8th.

According to the court, the hearings, which are slated to end on June 31st, are being conducted “by four magistrates who act as assistants/instructors in the cabinet of Minister Alexandre de Moraes.”

Two hundred and thirty-two people were concentrated on the initial block of defendants and remain in prison, accused of serious crimes: armed criminal association, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law and attempted coup d’état, qualified damage due to violence and serious threat with the use of flammable substances against the property of the Union, as well as deterioration of patrimony.

The prosecution witnesses are being heard in the first part of the investigative hearings, in the presence of representatives of the Attorney General’s Office, defendants and lawyers.

During the second stage, defense witnesses will be heard and defendants will be questioned.

More than 2,000 people were detained after the January 8th coup attempt. Most were released after the application of precautionary measures.

Two hundred and fifty-three people are still currently detained, and so far, the STF has analyzed 1,245 complaints.
