Security in public transport in El Salvador highlighted

San Salvador, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) Nearly 2,400 public transport employees were murdered in El Salvador years ago, Diario El Salvador highlights today when reflecting on the elimination of this threat.

The serious problem of insecurity caused by gangs against collective transports of passengers, that for decades suffered the murder of drivers, collectors, route dispatchers and businessmen was solved by the government security plans implemented, the publication pointed out.

The non-payment of extortion, “rent”, imposed by terrorist groups on bus and minibus owners who, according to estimates by the National Transport Board, were forced to pay an estimated 19 million dollars to the gangs each year, was the common denominator of these murders, the newspaper explained.

The death of 17 people burned to death inside a bus in the municipality of Mejicanos, in the capital, killed by gangs on June 20, 2010, is still fresh in the memory of Salvadorans.

Organized as revenge by the Barrio 18 against their rivals of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), this massacre is considered the bloodiest of the gangs in El Salvador, due to cruelty never seen before against the civilian population.
