“The Amazon is a Brazil´s sovereign territory, but at the same time it belongs to all humanity. And, for such a reason, we will do everything and every effort to keep it standing,” Lula said at a music festival in Paris.
He also stressed that rich countries have a historical debt and must finance the preservation of forests, including the Amazon.
“It was not the African people who pollute the world, it is not the Latin American people who pollute the world,” Lula added. In fact, “those who have polluted the whole planet in the last 200 years have been those who have carried out the industrial revolution and for that reason they have to pay the historical debt they owe the Earth”.
The Brazilian president was invited by the band Coldplay to attend the Power Our Planet event at the Campo de Marte in Paris.
