Chile continues demolition of the so-called narco mausoleums

Santiago de Chile, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) Chilean authorities on Thursday demolished a second narco memorial, which are improvised structures built in recent years in the capital by organized crime and which have become focal points of violence and crime.

The site, located in a plaza in the Quilicura district, had electricity and a space for barbecues and parties, and had been erected by gang members to pay tribute to an individual killed in a shootout between rival groups.

“As government we are determined to confront drug trafficking and this is serious,” Metropolitan Presidential Delegate Constanza Martínez said.

On June 1, in his second public account rendering, Chilean President Gabriel Boric announced funds for the communes in order to demolish these buildings and recover the spaces for the population.

According to a first cadaster made by authorities, in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago there are about 30 structures of this kind that will be eliminated and recreational sites will be built instead.
