The day before, the Legislative Assembly approved the reduction of the number of municipalities from 262 to 44, after an intense debate that evidenced the existing contradictions in the country, where there was no lack of accusations of political manipulation, concealment of corruption and lies to Salvadorans.

The change introduced in the message to the country on June 1 by President Nayib Bukele uncovered criticism and support in a heated political environment that began to recreate itself in the adoption of the initiative to reduce the number of deputies from 84 to 60, as it existed before the signing of the Peace Accords.

Criticisms from opposition political media, research centers and personalities were not lacking in the last days, in which sectors close to the government pointed out that the change was necessary to achieve a “better government” and to save resources.

According to the ruling party, it is a reorganization of the country’s structure, “to make root changes” as the president of the Assembly, Ernesto Castro, paraphrased Bukele, although in the opposite camp there was no lack of arguments that everything has electoral purposes.
