The official noted that during the visit of Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister, to Kiev, he and President Vladimir Zelenski signed a joint statement setting out Canada’s support for Ukraine to become a member of NATO as soon as conditions allow it.

Zhovkva recalled that Ukraine also signed a joint declaration with Romania at the summit of the European Political Community held on June 1 in Moldova.

In his turn, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana stated that the Atlantic Alliance states still failed to reach a compromise on Ukraine’s membership in the bloc, stressing that in the period of such a large and difficult war, the issue should be postponed.

In early May, Zelenski acknowledged that Ukraine would not join the Atlantic Alliance before the end of the conflict, but would like to receive support from the partners in the form of an invitation to the bloc.

At the end of September 2022, the Ukrainian leader submitted an application for NATO membership on an accelerated basis. Later, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan noted that Ukraine’s admission is currently untimely.
