Sudanese government declares UN envoy persona non grata

Khartoum, Jun 9 (Prensa Latina) UN envoy for Sudan, Volker Perthes, has been reportedly declared "persona non grata" by the Sudanese Government after linking him directly to the conflict.

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has notified United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres of its decision. Perthes was in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, on Thursday.

According to press sources, Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan accused the diplomat of being responsible at the beginning of the conflict that broke out on April 15, 2022, with the so-called Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

General Al-Burhan said Perthes was not clear in his reports about the explosive situation in Khartoum even before the conflict began.

Since he was appointed a special envoy in 2021, Perthes has acted as a mediator between the warring parties in Sudan and recently moved his offices to the coastal city of Port Sudan.

Recent reports from medical organizations have estimated that, due to the war, the deaths of civilians in Sudan have exceeded one thousand, with more than six thousand wounded and a large number of missing and displaced persons. The armed clashes in Sudanese territory broke out last April 15 due to contradictions between the leaderships of the government troops and the RSF, in relation to the integration of the latter into the Army.
