Chilean constitutional process enters a new stage

Captura-24-768x456
Santiago, Chile, May 31 (Prensa Latina) The drafting of a new Chilean Constitution by a commission of experts appointed by the National Congress entered a new stage.

All 14 chapters of the draft and the transitory resolutions were made available to the recently elected Constitutional Council, which will take office on June 7 to prepare the final version.

According to Commission President Veronica Undurraga, it is a good-quality document, which reflects “the pluralism present in Chilean society.”

“This is not the Constitution dreamed of any of us, but one under which all Chileans feel they can live together and have as their own,” the expert said.

Undurraga called on the constitutional advisers, who will have five months to fulfill their mission, to work with the same spirit and sense of commitment.

One of the highlights of the project was to declare the country a social and democratic State of law, where fundamental freedoms are recognized and the progressive development of guarantees for all its inhabitants is promoted.

According to the draft Constitution, human dignity is inviolable and the basis of law and justice, adding that people are born free and equal in dignity and their respect and guarantee is the first duty of the political community.

The next stage will involve the Constitutional Council, made up of 51 members, in which the extremist Republican Party and the right-wing Chile Vamos coalition have a qualified majority and the possibility of vetoing.
