Nikolai Denkov will try to form government in Bulgaria

Sofia, May 29 (Prensa Latina) Bulgarian President Rumen Radev gave Nikolai Denkov the mandate to form a new government in the hope of putting an end to more than two years of political instability.

His appointment came despite an audio leak scandal that lies behind the deal struck between Denkov’s Continuing Change Party (PP) and the conservative Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB).

The wiretaps reveal, among other issues, the future strategy of PP, a party led by former Prime Minister Kiril Petkov to isolate GERB, affected by the corruption scandals of former head of government Boiko Borisov.

The audios also refer to a conversation that Petkov had with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, about the possible entry of Bulgaria into the Schengen border-free area in the mandate of the future Executive.

The leaks followed the achievement of an agreement between conservatives and liberals to put an end to the political deadlock in the country and avoid new elections, which would be the sixth in just two years.

Among the points of the pact is the rotation every nine months of the post of Prime Minister.
