On his Twitter account, the president described the narrator, poet and playwright as an essential man of Cuban culture and conveyed his deepest condolences to his family, colleagues and his readers.
On his social network, Minister of Culture Alpidio Alonso expressed his sorrow for the death of the intellectual, of great prestige inside and outside Cuba.
“He achieved what he wanted: to be a writer. He created a work that will survive him. He leaves surrounded by everyone’s admiration and affection. See you always, poet,” he said.
“Antón left us. One of our greats with a capital letter. He knew how to explore secret areas of Cubanness as a narrator, playwright, poet and chronicler. Rest in peace, brother,” writer and essayist Abel Prieto, president of Casa de las Americas, posted on Twitter.
