BINUH concerns over violence against Haitian police officers, judges

Port-au-Prince, May 19 (Prensa Latina) The UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) on Friday expressed deep concerns over threats, intimidations and violent acts against police officers, judges and judicial actors.

BINUH urged local authorities to take pressing measures to guarantee safety for magistrates and judicial actors working in difficult conditions.

BINUH’s statements come after an armed attack on judge Jean Wilner Morin on Wednesday, in which his vehicle was shot ten times on Freres Avenue.

The magistrate and his driver were unharmed, the Professional Association of Judges later confirmed and strongly condemned in a note the “odious” attack, while urging appropriate authorities to claim responsibilities and guarantee citizens the right to safety.

Judge Morin is currently investigating into several sensitive files related to corruption cases, such as that of the former director of the General Customs Administration Romel Bell and Edwine Tonton, responsible for the Social Assistance Fund.

The attack on Morin comes at a time when violence has increased in Haiti, ravaged by armed groups and with a chronic political destabilization.
