Lula signs decree easing access to information in Brazil

Brasilia, May 16 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday signed a decree updating the Law of Access to Information (LAI), which, among guarantees, preserves applicant´s identity.

LAI was founded to provide more transparency and ease governments’audit. In the act of signing three decrees, Lula assured that ‘the light of transparency is pivotal so that the public power does not get sick or live in the dark.’

Currently, Fala.BR information request system already provides applicant with the condition of anonymity if requested. The new provision formalizes the existence of this option in the LAI regulation.

According to the general controller of the Union Vinicius Carvalho, the requests of over 300 federal government entities will go faster with the changes implemented by the Lula-signed decree.

To Carvalho, classifying information as anonymous and confidential will also have to be explained more explicitly and substantiated by the public entities.

According to the Office of the Comptroller General of the Union (CGU), Lula also signed an order instituting the Council for Transparency, Integrity and Combating Corruption, replacing the current collegiate Council, with strong participation of civil society.
