Cuban president recalls anniversary of Saratoga Hotel explosion

MDC
Havana, May 6 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Saturday recalled the first anniversary of the tragic explosion at the Saratoga Hotel, in Havana, where 47 people were killed and 99 were injured.

The head of State wrote on his Twitter account that “the gruesome images of horror, the avalanche of solidarity that arose in our people and the heroism of the men and women who came to the rescue are still fresh in our memory. Days of great pain and unity.”

On the morning of May 6, 2022, the tourist facility was damaged by a strong blast as a tanker truck laden with liquefied gas was serving hotel.

The shock wave destroyed the façades of the three lower floors of the building and affected 23 buildings in the area, including 17 homes.

Immediately, brigades of rescuers, firefighters and specialized personnel began the urgent and careful work of removing debris and searching for trapped people, while the injured were evacuated to various hospitals in the capital, where actions were taken to care for the victims.

The tragedy demonstrated the value of solidarity, when the population turned to provide assistance to those affected in the initial minutes, and then supported the work of the rescuers during the anguishing rescue operations that lasted more than 144 hours.
