EU demands control on return of immigrants

Brussels, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) European Union (EU) lawmakers on Friday demanded the establishment of an independent monitoring mechanism so as to prevent the illegal return of asylum seekers at the bloc's borders.

In a declaration issued by the European Parliament, they also expressed support for the tightening of controls at the EU’s borders for immigrants who, in principle, do not comply with the conditions of entry into a member state.

Outlined in a package of legislative bills to reform the bloc’s migration and asylum system, the measures include identification, fingerprinting, security checks, preliminary health assessments, and vulnerability.

These provisions could then lead to an accelerated return process, in line with an initial proposal by the European Commission.

To prevent unlawful returns, the report calls on member states to establish independent monitoring mechanisms to verify whether the national authorities and agencies, such as Frontex and the European Union Agency for Asylum, comply with human rights standards.
