The message released this Wednesday in Havana adds that in the midst of the growing energy and food crisis, the uncertainty of world economic prospects and the increasing impact of climate change, the UN points to a necessary sustainable industrial transformation to reduce the gap in development.
This gap is located by the global organization between different countries, hence the need, in addition to meeting climate levels and achieving sustainable development objectives.
The Financing for Sustainable Development Report 2023 related to the communiqué points to financing sustainable transformations.
Said document affirms that urgent and massive investments are needed to accelerate the transformations, which includes the electricity supply, industry, agriculture and buildings.
In this regard, the note that the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, expressed that without the necessary means to invest in sustainable development and transform their energy and food systems, developing countries are being left behind, stands out.
In the foreword to the report, the headline notes that a dual world divided between haves and have-nots is a clear and obvious danger to any country.
He then stresses the need to urgently restore global cooperation and find solutions to the current crisis by acting multilaterally.
According to the report, some of the necessary changes are already taking place. The energy crisis caused by the conflict in Ukraine stimulated investment for the global energy transition, which in 2022 reached a record 1.1 trillion dollars (one trillion equals one million million).
Investments for the energy transition surpassed those for fossil fuel systems for the first time in 2022, but almost all of them took place in China and developed countries.
The Financing for Sustainable Development Report 2023 shows that most developing countries do not have the resources to invest, unlike their counterparts, the developed countries.
Along these lines, he points out that industrialization has historically been a source of progress, economic growth, job creation, technological development, and poverty reduction.
The report calls for a new generation of sustainable industrial policies, supported by integrated national planning, to scale up investments and lay the foundations for the necessary transformations.
Moreover, it refers to a recent rapid acceptance of technology that points to the possibility of an equally rapid transition to sustainable growth and industrialization.
Between 2021 and 2022, more than 338 million people used the Internet regularly, which represents an increase of approximately 38,600 more people every hour.
In addition, in regions with high-quality related services, 44 percent of companies are exporters, as opposed to 19 percent in those where Internet services are more deficient, the UN statement said.
