Caribbean countries promote cassava culture as a world heritage

Paris, March 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela on Friday presented to UNESCO the candidacy file to include the tradition of producing and consuming cassava in the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Government representatives of the countries involved in the first multinational file of its kind in Latin America and the Caribbean handed over the document in Paris to Firmin Matoko, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations.

Matoko welcomed the participants and highlighted the step taken for the first time in the region by five nations committed to preserving the traditional knowledge and practices for preparing and consuming cassava, an ancestral crop.

As a complement to the joint work, the Caribbean countries committed to preserving the traditional knowledge and practices for preparing and consuming cassava organized a talk and tasting of typical varieties of the ancestral food.
