The Constitutional Court has until March 30th to issue its opinion on the request to impeach the president.

Social organizations support the impeachment of Lasso and plan to hold a sit-in this Monday on the outskirts of the institution to ask the judges for a decision in accordance with the law, which allows an institutional solution to the current situation in the country.

The different processes of the political trial against President Lasso could take over a month if it is admitted by the Constitutional Court.

Magistrate Teresa Nuques will verify that the request presented last week by the National Assembly is in line with the type of offenses typified in article 129 of the Constitution.

Regardless of its consideration, the votes of six out of the nine members of the Court would be necessary to start the trial.

The Ecuadorian presidency presented, on Saturday, to the Constitutional Court a document with the legal position of Lasso, who asks the institution to deny the request for impeachment against him.

The president took advantage of the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government held this weekend in the Dominican Republic and gave a speech defending himself against what he called a procedure “full of anomalies and accompanied by repeated attempts at destabilization.”

While the government denies the accusations and describes them as destabilization attempts, social organizations support Lasso’s removal from power, not only for the offenses typified but also for state abandonment.
