Egypt to host new meeting on climate change

Cairo, Mar 22 (Prensa Latina) Egypt will organize in the coming months a conference on the recently-approved financing fund to help vulnerable and poor countries pay for the growing costs of climate damage caused mainly by developed nations.

The announcement was made by the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, during his participation in the Ministerial Climate Conference, held this week in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Shoukry stressed that the meeting will take place in the city of Luxor and will discuss the implementation of the so-called loss and damage fund.

The measure was adopted during the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), held last November in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.

The initiative, a longstanding claim of the South, provoked heated debates during the conference due to the rejection by several wealthy powers.

The details of the operation for the initiative that will be drawn by a committee of 24 countries, including three from Latin America and the Caribbean, will be presented at the next summit (COP28) that is expected to take place in the United Arab Emirates next November.

The Egyptian foreign minister highlighted the importance of implementing the results and recommendations of COP27 to fight the negative impacts of climate change.
