Venezuelan President considers Helms-Burton Law a criminal policy

helms-Burton
Caracas, Mar 12 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro today considered the Helms-Burton Law as part of the immense framework built by US imperialism to implement its criminal policy of economic siege against Cuba.

In his Twitter account, the Head of State recalled this Sunday the 27th anniversary of the implementation of this illegal monstruosity that codified and internationalized the blockade policy “ignoring International Law, before the indifferent gaze of the Human Rights Organizations” .

On March 12, 1996, the then President of the United States William Clinton (1993-2001) signed the Law in a political gesture to satisfy the interests of extremist sectors of the Cuban-American community in Florida and in search of votes in the next elections.

Despite the manifest violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, the United States Congress sanctioned said project with the aim of tightening even more the cruel and inhumane economic sanctions against the island, as described by the Havana authorities.

After successive years of extension since the Clinton era, due to its impact on the world community, the administration of President Donald Trump (2017-2021) approved the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, which entered into force on 2 May 2019.

Its implementation allowed any United States citizen to claim before the courts of his country the properties that were confiscated by the revolutionary government with the birth of the Cuban Revolution, in 1959.

The tycoon’s decision and the set of 243 unilateral coercive measures approved against Cuba by his Executive, most of which are still in force with the current occupant of the White House, took the policy of siege against Havana to the extreme.

The report “Need to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” from last year showed that, at current prices, the accumulated damages during six decades of application of this policy amounted to 150 thousand 410.8 million dollars.

If the depreciation of the dollar against the value of gold in the international market is taken into account, the blockade caused quantifiable damages of over one trillion 326 thousand 432 million dollars, according to the document.
