The latest event framed in bilateral ties was the deportation on Friday of former Congresswoman Aida Merlano, who has made public the network of corruption in Colombian and Atlantic political processes, particularly during previous governments.

Venezuela is the guarantor and served as the venue for the first cycle of peace talks between the Colombian Government and the National Liberation Army (ELN).

Venezuela and Colombia reestablished diplomatic relations on August 29, 2022, when Colombian Ambassador Armando Benedetti presented his credentials to President Nicolas Maduro, an action that Venezuelan Ambassador Felix Plascencia did in Bogota on September 7, before President Gustavo Petro.

In late September 2022, Colombian and Venezuelan authorities publicly restored the official opening of the border, after seven years of closure, writing a new chapter in bilateral relations.
