Cuba, Robert and Moncada: the weight of dreams

Taichung, Chinese Taipei, Mar 11 (Prensa Latina) Cuban baseball is going through another transcendental period in its history amid an unprecedented brain drain and an interest in reinventing itself despite difficulties.

Currently, it is not strange to hear that the 5th World Baseball Classic (WBC) is part of a process that could bring more joy in the future, although now the energies are focused on qualifying to the second phase of the contest.

That is why so many people celebrate the wishes of Luis Robert Jr., Yoan Moncada, Andy Ibañez, Yoenis Cespedes, Lorenzo Quintana, Roenis Elias, Miguel Romero, Ronald Bolaños, Onelki Garcia and others who also said “yes, I do” to play for their homeland.

However, while many applaud these decisions, there are those who disapprove of the reconciliation attempt, although we have to get rid of other archaic ideas, to which Robert Jr. and Moncada, both from the Chicago White Sox, responded to a question from Prensa Latina.

“People have their own thoughts and act as they want. My dream was to come here, represent Cuba, play in the World Classic,” said the center fielder, who is among the top 100 Major League Baseball (MLB) players.

Moncada, in turn, noted, “I don’t live with people, everyone has their ideologies and their way of speaking, I took the step because it was a dream that I had in mind since I lived in Cuba.”

The 27-year-old third baseman, who has been for several seasons at the top level of the MLB, added that “it was one of the things my dad wanted and I decided to do so, for him, for me.”

On the subject, Coach Armando Johnson stated that the team was “strengthened by the arrivals of athletes who came from other leagues, like a big family, convinced that the purpose of the team is above any personal interest.”

Undoubtedly, the unprecedented call raised an effervescence that many considered dead in the country, because, in a certain way, baseball is reinventing itself, like a puzzle, to recover its winning lineage. jg/ro/jdg
