Greece faces day of strikes due to tragic train accident

grecia-huelga
Athens, Mar 8 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of Greek workers went out to the streets today to join a new general strike in protest against the tragic train accident that took place last week in the country, which left 57 dead.

According to the authorities, transportation in the capital has been affected throughout the city during this day, according to television reports.

As anticipated by the unions, the protests will last at least until Wednesday to focus on the poor situation of the railway system.

Several organizations have also called for demonstrations against the government on a route that will end in front of the parliament building in Athens, according to reports in the newspaper “Kathimerini”.

The accident that took place on February 28 in the city of Tempe has shocked the country and raised criticism about the management of the national railway network and the poor conditions of its infrastructures.

Employees in the sector have been warning for years about negligence, as well as a lack of resources and personnel. Now, the situation has led thousands of people to protests to request an improvement in these conditions, while workers have been calling 24-hour strikes for almost a week.

For their part, the labor unions claimed that they will continue to strike as they fight for safe train traffic and hope that the truth will come out and those responsible for the accident will be brought to justice.

Despite the authorities’ denial of the problems in the sector, last Sunday Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis admitted there have been decades of negligence that could have contributed to the disaster.
