Law in Nicaragua withdraws nationality from traitors to the homeland

Managua, Feb 9 (Prensa Latina) The National Assembly (unicameral parliament) of Nicaragua approved today the Reform Law of article 21 of the Political Constitution, which stipulates that traitors to the homeland lose their nationality.

As reported, the initiative was approved with 89 votes and was sent by the deputies of the bench of the Sandinista National Liberation Front.

The reasons recalled that the Magna Carta in article one agrees that all Nicaraguans must preserve and defend independence, sovereignty and national self-determination.

In this regard, the approval in 2020 of Law 1055 was mentioned, which establishes that Nicaraguans who carry out acts harming the supreme interests of the nation are considered traitors to the homeland, without prejudice to the punitive actions established in the penal code.

In this sense, the text indicates that in consequence of the aforementioned, “it is necessary to expand article 21 of the Constitution, in the sense that traitors to the homeland lose their status as Nicaraguan nationals” for injuring said interests.

During the same session, the parliamentarians approved another regulation, the Special Law that approves the loss of nationality.

The new legislation consists of four sections, the first regulates the loss of nationality stipulated in article 21 of the Constitution.

The second states that the people sentenced under the provisions of Law 1055 on the Defense of People’s Rights to Independence, Sovereignty and Self-Determination for Peace, will lose their nationality.

For its part, article three establishes that the judicial authority is competent to apply these regulations after notifying the Supreme Electoral Council.

Meanwhile, article four says that the aforementioned law will enter into force from its publication in any written or digital media, without prejudice to its publication in the Official Gazette.

The parliament of this Central American nation approved these regulations after reporting this morning the deportation to the United States of 222 people sentenced here for committing acts that incited violence, terrorism and economic destabilization.

The Managua Court of Appeals reported that the deportees were declared traitors to the Homeland and punished for different serious crimes and permanently disqualified them from exercising public office on behalf of the service of the State of Nicaragua.

In addition, they were prevented from holding elected positions, and their citizen rights were perpetually suspended.
