Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Chairman Osama Rabie said in a communique that the canal surpassed the previous record achieved in August 2022 by 56 million dollars.

Rabie noted that 2,155 vessels crossed the canal in January 2023, with a total tonnage of 123.5 million tons, a growth of 21.5 percent and 17.1 percent year-on-year, respectively.

According to the SCA, the Suez Canal broke its revenue record in 2022 by collecting eight billion dollars, 1.7 billion dollars more than in 2021.

Built between 1859 and 1869, the 193-kilometer-long Suez Canal is a man-made sea-level waterway through which around 12 percent of global trade passes through it, according to official figures.
