UN chief calls to make huge efforts to stamp out child labor

United Nations, Jan 6 (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres on Friday branded child labor as the enemy of children's development and progress, and also called for making much more efforts to stamp it out.

According to the UNSG, as many as 160 million children are victims of child labor worldwide, a scourge that really limits children´s right to education access. Much more must be done to put an end to child labor, Guterres live-tweeted.

The UN defines ¨child labor¨ term as any work that deprives children of their initial stage of life, their potential and dignity, and it is detrimental to their physical and psychological development.

Child labor puts children at risk and breaches both international law and national legislations. It also deprives children of their education access and even requires them to assume a double burden: work and school.

Among the worst child labor forms, the UN listed slavery or similar practices, as well as children in prostitution or other illegal activities.

For its eradication, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) renewed UN´s and world leaders´ commitment for 2030 agenda.
