Researchers found that suicide is the second leading cause of death among women ages 20-24 in the United States, and the third leading cause among women ages 25-34.
“We´re looking at connection between summary data on state-level causes of death and policy, but there is much more we need to understand about what these findings mean for individual suicide risk,” said Rebecca Waller, Assistant Professor of the Psychology Department at the University of Pennsylvania and co-author of the study.
These results were added to the existing study on restrictive access to abortion and increased negative mental health consequences for women.
Such a research tracks the long-term impact of having an abortion or not being able to access one.
U.S. states that restricted access to abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade have higher rates of maternal mortality and infant death, according to other research by The Commonwealth Fund.
On June 24, the Supreme Court decided to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, thus nullifying the right to abortion.
