UN allocates 14M USD for humanitarian aid in South Sudan

United Nations, Dec 22 (Prensa Latina) The UN humanitarian agency has provided million to support the provision of direct humanitarian assistance to 262,521 people in South Sudan who have been affected by increased violence and severe flooding, according to Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths.

The funding will enable the scale-up of existing multipurpose cash programs ensuring critical life-saving services, including protection, health, education, water, sanitation, and hygiene activities for the people most in need, Griffiths added.

However, according to UN projects, 9.4 million of tmost vulnerable South Sudanes people will be in need of pressing assistance and protection, up from 8.9 million in 2021.

After a five-year civil war that wrecked domestic economy and causing nearly 400,000 deaths and unleashed a humanitarian crisis, the South Sudanese still face the reconciliation challenge.

According to analysts, disputes increased in 2022 due to inter-community clashes and food insecurity which threatens 7.7 million people.

Humanitarian organizations warned that more than 9,000 civilians have been displaced since mid-November in the northern South Sudanese state of Upper Nile following clashes between rival groups.
