Montreal, Canada, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) The 15th Conference of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) will conclude today in Canada, and the majority of delegates advocate fulfilling environmental commitments to stop the deterioration of global biodiversity.

The participants of the event carried out negotiations and made progress on issues for technical and scientific cooperation, but they agreed that there is still a lot to do and little time to act.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature denounced that human activity is devastating marine species, with the latest data indicating that 28 percent of the 150,388 species, included in the Red List, are in danger of extinction.

In this context, Cuba highlighted that the actions to reverse the loss of biological diversity are complex challenges to overcome by developing countries, who are obliged to use their limited financial and technological resources to fight the crisis, which worsened with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cuba expressed its support for a Post-2020 Global Strategic Framework for Biodiversity that reflects in a balanced manner the objectives of the agreement, that its goals are global, bear concrete commitments and that in no way condition implementation at the national level.

Cuba’s position focuses on the fact that the financing goal sustains the legitimacy and effectiveness of the strategic framework, hence the importance of a clear definition of the financial amounts to be committed, mainly by developed countries.

Failure to comply with these could undoubtedly have worse consequences for global biodiversity, warned the delegation from the Caribbean island that attended the meeting that began on December 7.

Cuba has adopted in its Constitution, the right to enjoy a healthy and balanced environment, establishing as one of its ecological priorities, the attention to one of the main potential problems, “the loss of biodiversity”, which allows progress in the sustainable management and restoration of marine-coastal and terrestrial ecosystems.
